Honda Engine Families in Dallas, TX

Seven families cover the engines people replace most often. Learn to read the code and the search gets short; if you cannot read it yet, the car is a perfectly good place to start.

Each family below has its own page: what the engine is, how the variants differ from one another, which vehicles were built with them, and what has to line up before a used unit goes into a car. Those pages are more useful once you can read the code itself, and Honda’s naming is consistent enough that reading it is a skill you learn once.

How a Honda engine code is built

Take K24A2 and split it into three parts.

  • K is the family. It groups engines that share an architecture. The K-series is the chain-driven twin-cam four that arrived in 2001; the B-series is what it took over from in Honda’s performance cars; the D-series is the older single-cam small four, replaced in the mainstream cars by the R-series in 2006; the J-series is the 60-degree V6.
  • 24 is the displacement with the decimal point taken out. K24 is 2.4 litres, D17 is 1.7, J35 is 3.5, B20 is 2.0. It holds across every engine on this site.
  • A2 is the variant. This is the part that identifies one specific engine rather than a group of them, and it is the part that most often goes missing.

Family code and variant code are different claims

K24 names a family and a displacement. K24A2 names an engine: the 2004–2008 Acura TSX unit, with a head, a compression ratio and an intake manifold that the other K24s do not share. Both are correct ways to speak, but only one of them describes what is on the pallet.

That gap is where most bad engine purchases start. Someone advertising a “K24” is usually not being careless, because the short form is simply how people talk about these engines. It does mean the specific question is still open, and the code stamped into the block is what closes it.

Japanese-market units add one wrinkle worth knowing before you read a listing. A K24 pulled from a JDM Accord frequently reads just K24A, with no trailing digit, because that is the designation the engine was given rather than an abbreviation the seller invented. Read as though it were a North American code, it looks like missing information when it is not.

Three ways in, depending on what you already know

You have the code. Go straight to the family page. It sets out the variants, the vehicles each one was built for, and the differences that decide whether two engines with the same first three characters are actually substitutes.

You have the car. Start on the vehicle pages. They work generation by generation and trim by trim, which is the order the information reaches you in real life: you know it is a 2010 Accord long before you know it is a K24Z3.

What these pages claim, and what they do not

Every application table on this site records which vehicles left the factory with a given engine code. That is a historical fact, it is checkable, and it is the only fitment claim these pages make on their own.

It is not the same as saying a used engine will work in your car. That question runs through the intake manifold, the ECU and immobiliser, the transmission and bellhousing, the accessory and mounting layout, the wiring harness and the exhaust, none of which a factory application list describes. Common questions

What is the difference between an engine family and an engine variant?

A family groups engines that share an architecture and a displacement: K24, R18, J35. A variant is one specific engine within that family, with its own head, cams, compression and intake — K24A2, R18Z1, J35A4. Both are real names, but only the variant tells you what a seller actually has. When a listing gives you the family alone, the specific question is still open.

How do I read a Honda engine code?

Split it into three parts. The first letter is the family, which tells you the architecture. The two digits are the displacement written without the decimal point, so K24 is 2.4 litres and D17 is 1.7. Everything after that identifies the variant. K24A2 is a 2.4-litre K-series in one specific specification.

I only know the car, not the engine code. Where do I start?

Start from the vehicle pages instead. They break each model down by generation and trim and tell you which engine that combination should have, which is the same information approached from the direction most buyers actually have. If you can get to the engine bay, the stamped code on the block confirms it and is worth more than any of it.

Do these pages tell me whether an engine will fit my car?
