Honda and Acura Engines by Vehicle

Most people know their car better than they know their engine. These pages work in that direction: pick the vehicle, find the generation, and see which engine it left the factory with.

There are two ways into an engine search. You can start from the engine — a code you read off a block, or one somebody quoted at you — or you can start from the car sitting in the driveway. For most people the second is easier, because the year, the model and the trim are things you already know without opening the hood.

That is what these pages are for. Each one takes a vehicle, splits it into the generations that matter, and records which engine each generation was sold with. What comes out the other end is an engine code you can search on, ask about, and check against the stamp when you get a chance to look.

Trim, not year, is what decides the engine

If there is one idea to take away from this site, it is this one. Almost every engine order that goes wrong goes wrong here, and it goes wrong quietly: the request looks complete, the supplier looks confident, and the mistake only becomes visible when the engine is on the ground next to the car.

The clearest example is the Civic. A 2008 Civic LX has an R18A1 — a 1.8-litre single-cam four. A 2008 Civic Si has a K20Z3 — a 2.0-litre twin-cam. Different families, different transmissions, same badge, same year, same shape in a parking lot. There is no version of “2008 Honda Civic” that identifies one of those two, so an order placed on that phrase is filled by guessing.

The same pattern turns up in different clothing across the range. On the Accord the dividing line is four-cylinder against V6. On the TL it is whether the car is a Type-S. On the MDX it is which side of 2007 the vehicle sits on. On the CR-V the split is generational rather than trim-based, which makes it one of the easier ones — but a first-generation CR-V still changes variant partway through its run.

So the order of operations is: year narrows it to a generation, trim usually decides it, and the code stamped on the block settles it.

What the generation tables are, and what they are not

Every table on these pages records what vehicles were built with. That is a historical fact about a factory. It is not a statement that any particular used engine will work in any particular car, and the difference matters more the older the vehicle gets.

Cars in this age range have often had an engine already. A table cannot know that, and neither can a year and a model on their own. Whether a specific engine will work in a specific car also depends on the intake manifold, the ECU and immobiliser, the transmission and bellhousing, the accessory layout, the harness and the exhaust — which is why fitment gets verified against your vehicle before anything is confirmed.

Common questions

Should I start from the car or from the engine code?

From the car, unless you have already read the code stamped on the block. Almost everyone knows their year, model and trim; far fewer know their engine variant, and working backwards from a half-remembered code is how the wrong engine gets ordered. Start with the vehicle page, use it to work out which engine you should be looking at, then confirm it against the stamp.

Why does the trim matter more than the model year?

Because on several of these vehicles the trim is what changes the engine family. A 2008 Civic LX has an R18A1 and a 2008 Civic Si has a K20Z3 — same year, same shape, different engines bolted to different transmissions. The year narrows it to a generation. The trim is usually what decides it.

The engine in my car may already have been replaced. Do these pages still help?

They help you narrow the search and they cannot confirm what is in the car now. Every generation table on this site records what the vehicle was built with, which is a fact about the factory rather than about your car. On a vehicle old enough to need an engine, the code stamped on the block is the only source worth trusting.
