Buying a replacement engine is unusual among car repairs in that the expensive mistake happens before anything is installed. Order the wrong engine and you have paid freight twice on a heavy object, waited a week, and still do not have a running car. Order a poor engine and you find out after the labour has already been spent putting it in.

Do these guides tell me what an engine costs?
No, and that is deliberate. Engine pricing depends on the family, the variant, the condition, what is included and how it reaches you, and a range published on a page would be wrong for most people who read it. The buying guide explains what moves the number so you can read a real quote properly.
