How to verify engine fitment
Fitment is not one question. It is seven, and the block bolting up answers only the first of them.
“Will this engine fit my car?” sounds like a yes-or-no question with a lookup-table answer. It is not, and treating it that way is how people end up with a heavy object in their driveway that will not go in their car.
There are really two separate questions hiding inside it. The first is which engine your vehicle was built with — a historical fact, answerable from records. The second is whether one specific used engine, with its own history and its own accessories, will work in your specific car. The first question is easy and most sellers answer it. The second is the one that decides whether the project succeeds.
Why the model year is never enough
Honda sold the same car in the same year with different engines. That single fact is behind most mis-ordered engines.
A 2008 Civic is an R18A1 if it is an LX or an EX and a K20Z3 if it is an Si — different displacement, different valvetrain, different transmission, same badge and same shape. A 2005 Accord is a K24A4 with four cylinders and a J30A4 with six. A 2010 MDX is a J37 where an otherwise reasonable person would expect a J35.
None of that is visible from outside the car, and none of it is recoverable from a year alone. An order placed on year and model cannot be filled correctly; it can only be guessed at.
What actually settles it
In rough order of how much each one narrows the answer.

The VIN and the stamped code are the two that do real work, and they answer different questions — one describes the car as built, the other describes the car as it is now. On a vehicle old enough to be on its second engine, only the second one is current. Where to find the stamp is covered here.
Seven things beyond the block
Assume the engine is the correct family and variant. These are what still decide whether it runs in your car, roughly in the order they cause trouble.

Transmission and bellhousing
The bolt pattern is frequently shared within a family, which is why swaps within the K-series are common. Gear ratios, final drive, the shift linkage and the axles are not shared, and they follow the transmission rather than the engine. An engine that attaches to your gearbox can still leave you with the wrong gearing and the wrong axles.

ECU and immobiliser
The most common reason a mechanically correct engine will not start. An imported engine and the ECU already in your car are not automatically a working pair, and on cars with an immobiliser the key, the ECU and the vehicle have to agree. This is a planning question, not something to discover on the day.

Intake manifold and clearance
Manifolds differ visibly between variants of the same family and they differ in height. On some chassis a taller manifold is a hood clearance problem that the family name gives no warning about. It is also one of the first parts a previous owner changes, so what is pictured is not necessarily what was fitted originally.

Accessory layout
Alternator, air conditioning compressor and power steering pump placement varies between applications of the same engine. For a like-for-like replacement this usually takes care of itself. For an engine coming out of a different vehicle it decides whether your existing brackets, belts and lines reach.

Wiring harness
Connector positions and pinouts follow the application. A harness that was built for the donor vehicle is not automatically the harness your car has, and adapting one is real work rather than a detail. Establish whether the engine comes with one and which vehicle it came from.

Exhaust manifold and downpipe
Where the exhaust leaves the head, and at what angle, differs enough between applications to matter. It is a smaller problem than the ECU but it is a problem that appears late, once everything else is in and the car is nearly ready.

Engine mounts
A replacement in the vehicle it came from uses the mounts already there. Anything else needs the mounting question answered explicitly, and on a swap it is usually a kit rather than an adaptation.
Replacement and swap are different projects
If the engine is going back into the car it came out of, most of the seven above take care of themselves. The mounts are there, the harness is there, the ECU already knows the engine. The work is establishing which engine that was, and then judging the condition of the one you are buying.
If the engine is going into something it never came in, every one of the seven is an open question that needs an answer before you pay, not after. That is not a reason to avoid a swap — plenty of them are well-trodden and well-documented. It is a reason to say so when you ask for a quote, because the engine we would recommend and the questions we would ask are different.
Does an imported engine change the answer?
It adds two questions rather than changing the seven above.
The first is which variant you are actually getting. Honda uses a four-character code for Japanese-market engines and five or more characters for export markets, so a stamp reading K24A points somewhere different from K24A2. That is a useful hint and not a rule, and it is one of the reasons the stamped pad matters more than the listing text.
The second is what arrived attached to it. An imported engine comes wearing the accessories from the car it left, and where those do not suit your vehicle the parts from your old engine go across instead. That transfer is a project in itself, and it interacts with the ECU and emissions-component questions rather than sitting beside them.
If your vehicle is registered in one of the Dallas–Fort Worth emissions program counties, there is a third consideration on top: which model year standard the vehicle is held to after an engine change.
What a responsible seller does
Confirms the variant from the stamped code rather than the listing description. Asks for your trim rather than assuming. Says which vehicle the unit came out of and what came with it. Tells you when your year and model point at two possible engines instead of picking one. And declines to confirm fitment on information that cannot support the confirmation.
A seller who answers “yes it fits” to a year and a model has not checked anything. They have agreed with you, which is a different service and worth less than it sounds.
Common questions
Is an engine that bolts up the same as an engine that fits?
No, and the gap between those two ideas is where most failed engine purchases live. Within a Honda family the bellhousing pattern is often shared, so the engine physically attaches to the transmission. Whether it then runs correctly depends on the ECU and immobiliser, the intake manifold, the accessory layout, the harness and the exhaust. Bolting up is the first of seven questions, not the answer to all of them.
Why do you need my trim when I already gave the year?
Because on several Hondas the trim is what decides the engine family. A 2008 Civic is an R18A1 as an LX or EX and a K20Z3 as an Si. Year and model narrow it to two candidates and trim picks between them. Without it, somebody is guessing, and the guess arrives on a pallet.
Does the VIN settle everything?
It settles what the vehicle was built with, which is the largest part of the question and the part hardest to get from memory. It cannot tell anyone what is in the engine bay right now if the car has already had an engine. That is what the stamped code on the block is for.
Can I verify fitment myself from a parts catalogue?
You can get a long way. Catalogue interchange data is built for the same purpose and it is good at the factory-fitment question. Where it tends to be thin is the swap case and the detail that decides a specific used unit — which variant it actually is, and whether the accessories and management that came with it match what your car expects.
What if my car already has a replacement engine in it?
Then the year and VIN describe a car that no longer exists mechanically, and the stamped code is the only source worth trusting. Photograph the pad on the front of the block and work from that. This is common on cars old enough to be on their second engine, which describes most of the market this site serves.
