Most people arrive at a Honda engine search from one of two places. Either something has gone wrong with a car that is otherwise sound, or a project needs an engine it never came with. The two lead to different questions, and it is worth knowing which one you are asking before you start comparing prices.
A replacement wants to match. The engine your car left the factory with is the one that fits the transmission, the mounts, the harness and the management already in the car, and the whole job is establishing which engine that was. A swap wants something the car never had, which means the engine is the beginning of the list rather than the end of it.
Either way the first useful step is the same: find out what you have. Honda’s naming is systematic but it is not obvious, and the family code — K24, R18, J35 — is not the same thing as the variant code, which is what actually identifies a specific engine.
Why the year of your car is not enough
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in Honda engine buying, so it is worth being blunt about it.
Take a 2008 Civic. If it is an LX or an EX, it has an R18A1: a 1.8-litre single-cam four. If it is an Si, it has a K20Z3: a 2.0-litre twin-cam. Those are different engine families, bolted to different transmissions, in a car with the same badge and the same shape. An order placed on “2008 Honda Civic” cannot be filled correctly — it can only be guessed at.
The Accord has the same problem along a different line: four-cylinder cars use the K-series and V6 cars use the J-series. The CR-V has it across generations rather than trims. The pattern repeats often enough that trim, not year, is the field we care most about after the model.

The factory application tables record what vehicles were built with, which is a different claim: whether a used engine will work in your car also depends on the intake manifold, the ECU and immobiliser, the transmission and bellhousing, the accessory layout, the harness and the exhaust.

How do I know which Honda engine I need?
Model year narrows it to a generation, trim usually settles it, and the code stamped on the block confirms it. The order matters: a 2008 Civic is an R18A1 or a K20Z3 depending only on whether it is an Si, so the year on its own is never enough. If the car has already had an engine, the stamp is the only source worth trusting.
What does JDM mean on a Honda engine?
That the engine was built for the Japanese domestic market rather than assembled into a North American car. For most families the practical consequence is which variant you get — a JDM K20A is a different specification from a USDM K20A3 — plus the ECU and immobiliser question that comes with any imported unit.
