Acura TL Replacement Engines in Dallas
A J-series car across the generations that see replacement demand — and one where the Type-S badge changes the engine rather than the trim level.
The TL is a J-series car throughout the generations that see replacement demand. The second generation used the J32, the third generation used the J32 in the base car and a J35 in the Type-S, and the fourth generation moved to later J-series variants.
The Type-S is the part worth being careful about. It is not a trim badge on the same engine — the third-generation Type-S used a different, larger-displacement J-series engine from the base car. An order that says "2007 Acura TL" without saying whether it is a Type-S is an order that cannot be filled without guessing.
The TL shares a great deal with the V6 Accord of the same era, which is useful context: the families are the same and much of the reasoning transfers, but the ancillaries and mounting follow the application rather than the family.
TL engines by generation and trim
Note the years attached to the Type-S row. The trim qualifier is doing real work here: it applies to part of the generation rather than all of it, and both halves of that qualifier matter.

Where TL engine orders go wrong
The first two below are identification problems and they account for most wrong TL orders. The second two are about what you are actually receiving once the right engine has been named.
Type-S and base cars of the same model year use different J-series engines.
In the third generation the base car carries a J32A3 and the 2007–2008 Type-S carries a J35A8. That is a displacement difference inside the same family, not a state of tune, and it is why "2007 Acura TL" describes two separate orders. The badge on the trunk lid and the VIN both distinguish them, and one of the two should be on the request.
The generation split matters: J32 and J35 are different displacements within the same family.
The J-series naming is systematic: the digits after the J are the displacement in litres. J30, J32, J35 and J37 are related architectures at four different sizes, which is exactly why they are easy to confuse in a listing and impossible to substitute in a car. Timing belt service history is part of the purchase on these engines.
These are belt-driven engines and most of them are old enough now that the belt is a live question rather than a future one. A used engine seldom arrives with service records. If the history is unknown, plan to do the belt and the water pump while the engine is out and accessible — it is far cheaper then than at any point afterwards.
Sharing a family with the V6 Accord does not make the ancillaries interchangeable.
The TL and the V6 Accord of the same era share a great deal, which is why the question comes up so often. The block architecture being close does not make the intake, the accessory layout, the mounting or the management interchangeable — those follow the car the engine was built for. Ask about the specific combination rather than reasoning from the family name.
Why the model year is not enough on a TL
Two things move independently of the year. The first is the generation boundary, which changes the engine family the car belongs to. The second is the Type-S, which existed alongside the base car for part of the third generation and did not share its engine.
Put those together and a request that reads “2007 Acura TL, V6” is still ambiguous, because both cars are V6s. The question that resolves it is whether the car is a Type-S, and it is a question worth answering before anything is quoted rather than after something is delivered.
Reading a J-series code
The family code carries the displacement and the suffix carries the variant. The displacement tells you which engine you are broadly looking at; the suffix is what decides whether a specific unit is the right one for a specific car, because that is where the differences in head, management and ancillaries are recorded.
The code is stamped on the block, and it is the only identification that survives a car having been worked on by people you never met. The engine code guide shows where to find it. Where you cannot get to it, the VIN encodes the engine the car was built with, which is the right answer for an unmodified car.
What we need to verify fitment
Model year, whether the car is a Type-S, the transmission, and the VIN or the stamped code. If the engine is going into something other than a TL, say so at the start — that is a different question with a different set of checks behind it.

Common questions
Is a Type-S engine the same as a base TL engine?
No. In the third generation the base car used a J32 and the Type-S used a larger-displacement J35. They are the same family and not the same engine, so whether the car is a Type-S belongs on the order alongside the year.
