Used engine warranty questions to ask
Terms vary completely between sellers. What does not vary is which questions separate a warranty that protects you from one that reads well.
There is no standard used-engine warranty. Duration, scope and exclusions differ from seller to seller, which means any page telling you what “the” warranty covers is inventing it.
What is consistent is the shape of the thing. Where cover exists it typically applies to the engine itself, for a defined period, and typically stops short of the labour to remove and refit it. Understanding that shape lets you read whatever you are actually offered.
Ten questions, in the order worth asking them
Send them in one message. A seller who answers all ten quickly is telling you how they operate, and so is one who answers three.

Is there a warranty at all, and for how long?
Establish the baseline before anything else. Duration is sometimes stated in days from delivery and sometimes from installation, and those are very different things if the car waits three weeks for a shop slot.

Does it cover parts only, or parts and labour?
Parts-only is the common case. Since install labour is usually the larger half of the total, this single answer can double or halve what a failure would cost you.

What exactly is covered — the long block, or everything attached?
Accessories bolted to a used engine are frequently excluded. Knowing this before you pay is what lets you plan to transfer your own instead.

What are the exclusions?
The exclusions list describes the warranty far better than its duration does. Read it before paying, not after a failure.

Does installation have to be by a licensed shop?
Many warranties require professional installation and documentation of it. If you are installing it yourself, this may decide whether you have a warranty at all.

What service items must be replaced during the install?
Timing belt, water pump, seals, fluids and filters are commonly conditions of cover. Skipping one to save money can cost the whole warranty.

What happens to the diagnosis if it fails?
Who pays to establish that the engine, rather than the install, is at fault? This is where disputes actually happen.

Is there a core charge, and what are its terms?
A deposit against returning your old engine. Note the deadline — and note that it competes with keeping the old engine as a parts source.

What is the return position if the engine is wrong on arrival?
Different from a warranty claim. If the variant is not what was described, who pays the freight in both directions?

Can I have all of that in writing before I pay?
The most important question on the list. A verbal warranty is not a warranty, and a seller who will not put terms in writing has answered a different question than the one you asked.
The labour gap, stated plainly
If you remember one thing from this page, make it this. A parts-only warranty means that when an engine fails inside its term, you may receive another engine and still pay a shop to take the failed one out and put the new one in.
On a four-cylinder that is a significant bill. On a V6 it is a larger one. It does not make a parts-only warranty worthless — far from it — but it does mean that comparing two offers on duration alone tells you very little.
Why the accessories usually are not covered
A used engine is pulled from a complete car with whatever was attached to it. Sellers commonly treat those parts as incidental rather than as part of the sale, which is why an alternator that arrives on the engine and fails a month later is often nobody’s responsibility.
The practical response is not to argue about it but to plan around it: transfer your own known-good accessories across where you can, and treat anything that arrives bolted on as a spare rather than a component you are relying on.
Documentation is the whole thing
Keep the written terms, the invoice, the installer’s records, and evidence that any required service items were replaced. Photograph the engine and the pallet on arrival before anything is unwrapped.

Does a used engine warranty cover installation labour?

If an engine fails under warranty, a replacement unit may be provided while the cost of removing the failed one and installing its replacement falls to you. Ask specifically, because it is often the larger number.
Are the accessories on the engine covered?
Frequently not. Parts bolted to a used engine are often treated as items that happened to be attached rather than as part of what was sold. That is a common and not unreasonable practice on a unit pulled from a complete car, and it is a good reason to transfer your own known-good accessories across instead.
What voids a used engine warranty?
Commonly: installation by someone unqualified, running the engine without correcting the fault that killed the last one, not replacing specified service items during the install, modification, overheating, and oil starvation. Ask for the exclusions list up front — it tells you more about the warranty than the headline duration does.
