Acura MDX Replacement Engines in Dallas
The MDX is a J-series SUV, but not the same J-series engine across its generations. The first generation is a J35 vehicle. From 2007 it is a J37 vehicle, and that is a different engine.
The first-generation MDX, from 2001 to 2006, is a J35 vehicle. The second generation moved to the J37 — a larger-displacement J-series engine, not a J35 variant — and that catches people out, because the family name looks close enough to be the same thing.
It is not. Ordering a J35 for a second-generation MDX is a wasted freight movement in both directions, and it happens often enough to be worth stating plainly on the page rather than leaving to the quote conversation.
The MDX otherwise carries the same considerations as the other J-series vehicles: a timing belt whose history is part of the purchase, an engine that generally worked under load, and ancillaries that follow the application rather than the family.
MDX engines by generation
Two rows, one boundary, and almost every avoidable MDX ordering mistake sits on the line between them. The first-generation row names the family rather than a variant because the specific unit is confirmed against the vehicle instead of guessed at here.

Where MDX engine orders go wrong
The first item is the one worth reading twice. The rest apply to any J-series engine of this age and are worth having in mind before a unit is chosen.
Second-generation MDX vehicles use a J37, not a J35. This is the most common ordering error on this vehicle.
The 2007 model year is the boundary. A J35 and a J37 are both J-series engines and they are not variants of one another — the digits carry the displacement, and these are two different engines that happen to be named a character apart. An order that lands on the wrong side of 2007 is discovered on delivery, and by then it has cost freight in both directions plus however long the vehicle sits waiting for the second attempt.
All-wheel drive brings drivetrain considerations beyond the engine itself.
This does not change which engine you need, but it changes the job around it. There is more to disconnect to get the engine out, and more that is worth inspecting while access is good. It is worth raising with whoever is doing the work before the engine arrives rather than after.
Timing belt history is part of what you are buying.
These are belt-driven engines and most of them have reached the age where the belt is a live question. A used engine rarely comes with records. If nobody can tell you when it was last done, plan to do the belt and the water pump on the stand — it is the cheapest it will ever be, and the alternative is doing it later through the top of an engine bay.
The MDX shares a family with the Odyssey and Pilot without sharing their ancillaries.
The MDX, the Odyssey and the Pilot share a family and, in places, closely related architecture. They do not share the parts hanging off it: intake, accessory layout, mounting and engine management follow the vehicle the engine was built for. A family match is a useful clue and it is not a fitment answer.
Why the year decides it — and still is not the end of it
On the MDX the model year is the decisive field, which is not true of most vehicles on this site. There is no trim split to worry about: the generation boundary and the engine boundary are the same line, so knowing the year gets you to the correct engine family immediately.
Decisive is not the same as sufficient. Inside the first generation the J35 variant follows the model year, and rather than print a variant code for each year at a confidence we cannot support, the table names the family and the specific unit gets confirmed against the vehicle. And the general caveat still applies: an MDX old enough to need an engine may already have had one, and no table knows that.
J35 and J37 are not the same engine
They are close enough in name to look like variants of each other and they are not. The digits in a J-series code are the displacement, so a J37 is a larger engine than a J35 in the way that matters to everything bolted to it. Ordering a J35 for a second-generation MDX is the single most common mistake made on this vehicle, and it is expensive precisely because it is not obvious — the order looks reasonable right up until the engine is on the ground next to the car.
