How to Find Your Honda Engine Code

The code struck into the block is the only description of your engine that cannot be argued with. Here is where it is, what it says, and what to do when you cannot read it.

Every Honda engine carries a code stamped into a flat machined pad on the block. It is a short string, four to six characters, and it is the difference between ordering an engine and guessing at one. Year and model narrow the field. Trim usually decides it. The stamp settles it.

The reason to go and look rather than working it out on paper is simple. Paper describes the car the factory built. The stamp describes the engine that is in the car now. On a fifteen-year-old Honda those are not always the same sentence, and the person who finds that out late is usually the one who has already paid freight.

Where the stamp is

The pad is not in the same place on every Honda engine, and most guides say it is. That single mistake is why people conclude their engine has no stamp: they are looking at the right engine in the wrong place.

In every case you are looking for the same object — a small machined rectangle on a block that is otherwise rough cast, with the code struck on one line and a serial number struck beneath it. Once you have found the flat spot, the characters follow.

The characters are struck rather than printed, which is why they survive. It also means they collect grease and road film until the pad reads as a flat grey rectangle. Wipe it with degreaser and a rag before you decide the stamp is missing.

Why the V6 is a special case

On the J30 and J35 the pad is where the table says, and access varies enough between applications that it is not worth pretending otherwise: some are visible from below on a lift and some effectively are not without moving something first. If you are working on a V6 without a lift, start with the year, model and trim, add the VIN, and treat the stamp as the confirmation step rather than the first step.

Reading the code

Honda’s naming is systematic. Once you know the pattern the string stops being a part number and starts being a description.

  • The letter is the engine family: B, D, F, H, J, K, R. It tells you the architecture and roughly the era.
  • The two digits are the displacement in tenths of a litre. K24 is 2.4 litres. D17 is 1.7. J35 is 3.5.
  • What follows is the variant, and it is the part that carries the information most listings leave out. K20A, K20A2, K20A3, K20Z1 and K20Z3 are all “a K20”, and they are not the same engine. Within the K-series the A and Z groupings are a rough generational marker, and the trailing digit separates specific specifications.
  • A longer number after the code is the serial number of that individual unit. It is not part of the specification and it does not need decoding.

One quirk is worth knowing before you look at import listings. Japanese-market units frequently carry the family code with no trailing digit at all — K20A, K24A — because that is the Japanese-market designation rather than a shortened version of a longer code. A listing that says K24A is telling you less than one that says K24A2, and the difference is not a typing error.

A family code is a starting point, not an order. Every one of these families splits into variants that differ in head, cams, compression, intake and engine management.

If the engine is already out of the car

This is the easy case and it is worth taking advantage of. With the engine on a stand or a pallet you can get square onto the pad, clean it properly, and light it from the side. Photograph it while you can. Once the replacement is in and the old unit has gone, the only record of what came out is the photograph you took.

While you are there, take the same photographs of the old engine that you would want a seller to send you of a new one: the stamp, both sides of the block, the intake side, the exhaust side, and the bellhousing face. If the replacement arrives and something does not match, those pictures are how you work out what.

If you cannot read the stamp

Work through these in order. Most engines give up the code by the second or third.

  1. Clean the pad with degreaser and a brass brush. Not a wire wheel, not a scraper, not sandpaper. Anything that removes metal removes the stamp with it.
  2. Light the pad from a low angle so the struck characters cast a shadow into their own depressions. Straight-on light is the worst case for reading a stamp.
  3. Photograph the pad across the surface rather than square onto it, with the flash on. A camera at a raking angle regularly reads characters an eye cannot.
  4. Take a rubbing. A sheet of paper over the pad and the side of a pencil lead will pull up characters that are legible as relief but not as shadow.
  5. Fall back to the vehicle. The VIN, the model year and the trim identify what the car was built with, and the VIN is decodable against factory records rather than by eye.
  6. Use the casting numbers on the block and head as corroboration. They are not the engine code and they do not replace it, but they narrow the field.

One thing the underhood emissions label will not do is give you the Honda code. The engine family string on that label is an emissions designation with its own format. The displacement printed alongside it is genuinely useful; the family string is not the same thing as the code on the block.

When the stamp has been altered

Ground flat, filled, restruck, or covered in fresh paint on an otherwise dirty block: all of these are reasons to stop rather than reasons to look harder. A legitimate used engine has no reason to have an illegible pad on a clean block. If you are looking at an engine to buy rather than one you already own, this belongs on the same list as a missing compression figure and a stock photograph. What to do with the code once you have it

Write it down exactly as struck, character by character, including anything that follows it. Transcription is where codes get lost: a zero and the letter O, a one and the letter I, a two and a Z on a worn pad. If you are sending it to anyone, send the photograph as well as the transcription.

Then the code becomes the starting point for the fitment question rather than the end of it. Knowing you have a K24A2 tells you what came out. What goes back in still depends on the transmission, the engine management and everything else the block bolts to. That is a separate exercise, and it is the one that decides whether the engine you order works.

Common questions

Where is the engine code stamped on a Honda engine?

It depends on the family, which is the part most guides get wrong. On the B-series and D-series the pad is on the face of the block that points toward the front of the car, near the transmission end. On the K-series it is on the driver’s side of the block near the starter, roughly under the intake manifold — not on the front face. On the J-series V6 it is on the front of the block toward the transmission end and is awkward to see with the engine in the car.

Is the engine code the same as the VIN?

No. The VIN identifies the vehicle and is stamped on the chassis and printed on the door jamb and the registration. The engine code identifies the engine and is stamped on the block. On a car that has never had an engine replaced they describe the same combination, which is why both are useful; on a car that has, only the engine code describes what is actually in it.

Can I identify my engine from the valve cover?

Not reliably. Valve covers are removed, swapped, repainted and sold separately, and the same cover appears across more than one variant in several families. A cover is a useful first filter and never a proof. The stamped pad on the block is the part of the engine that was struck at the factory and is not casually changed.

What do I do if the stamp is corroded or painted over?

Clean the pad gently with degreaser and a brass brush rather than anything that removes metal, then light it from a low angle so the struck characters throw a shadow. A photograph taken across the pad rather than square onto it usually reads better than the eye does. If the characters still will not resolve, the year, model, trim and VIN are enough for us to work from, and the casting numbers on the block are a secondary source.

What does the number after the engine code mean?

It is the serial number of that individual engine, not part of the specification. The code identifies which engine it is; the serial identifies which one of them it is. When you send a photograph of the pad, send the whole pad rather than just the first characters, because the boundary between the two is not always obvious.
