The J35 is the large-displacement J-series V6, and the one that carried Honda’s heavier vehicles for two decades. It shares the family’s 60-degree aluminium architecture with a single cam per bank, at an 89 mm bore and a 93 mm stroke.

It went into the vehicles that ask the most of an engine — minivans and three-row SUVs, generally carrying weight and often towing — which is why replacement demand on the J35 is high and why the condition question deserves more attention than usual. An engine out of a well-kept Odyssey and one out of a hard-worked Pilot are the same part number and not the same purchase.

The variant spread across the family is wide and spans a long production run, and several later variants introduced cylinder deactivation. That is a real difference in what the engine and its management expect, not a trim detail, and it is one of the places where ordering on the family name alone goes wrong.

Why “J35” tells you less than you would like

Most engine families on this site span one or two vehicle generations. The J35 spans about twenty years and four different vehicles, and Honda revised it repeatedly across that run. The consequence for a buyer is specific: on most families the model year gets you to a single candidate, and on this one it frequently does not.

That is not a reason to be nervous about the engine. It is a reason to treat a listing that says only “J35 V6” as an incomplete description rather than an identification, and to expect a seller to be able to name the variant they are actually selling.

Cylinder deactivation is a real difference, not a trim detail

Later J35 variants can shut down cylinders under light load to save fuel. Whatever you think of the feature, the point for a buyer is that the engine management expects different things from a variant that has it and one that does not.

So this is not a case where a near-enough variant quietly works. It is one of the specific things confirmed before a quote goes out, and it is worth asking about explicitly if you are buying elsewhere.

The vehicle it came out of is part of the information

J35s went into minivans and three-row SUVs. They carried people, luggage and weight, and a good number of them towed. Two J35s showing the same mileage can have had genuinely different lives, and on this family that gap matters more than the odometer reading does.

Not every J-series in these vehicles is a J35

The most expensive mistake on this family is not a J35 variant mix-up at all. It is ordering a J35 for a second-generation Acura MDX, which uses a J37 — a larger displacement engine in the same family, with a name close enough to look like a typo and different enough to be the wrong part.

With a V6 on a pallet, that error costs freight in both directions plus the time the vehicle spends waiting. It is the single reason the MDX page leads with the distinction rather than burying it.

Getting a V6 home

A J35 makes a heavy, bulky pallet. That is worth settling before you choose between collecting it and having it freighted, because the loading and unloading arrangements at your end matter more with a V6 than with a Civic engine. Identifying a J35

  • As with the J30, the stamp is awkward to reach on an installed transverse V6. Year, model and trim are the practical starting point and the stamp is the confirmation.
  • Read J35 followed by the variant. The A-series and Z-series split is roughly generational.
  • Whether the specific application used cylinder deactivation is one of the more consequential things to establish, and it does not follow reliably from the family name.

On an installed transverse V6 the stamped pad is awkward to reach, so most owners work from the vehicle details instead and confirm from the stamp later. What has to line up

  • Cylinder deactivation is present on some variants and not others, and it changes what the engine management expects.
  • Timing belt service history carries the same weight here as on the J30, on an engine that has usually worked harder.
  • The Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline and MDX applications differ in ancillaries and mounting even where the block is shared.
  • Front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive applications bring different drivetrain considerations to a swap.
