What "compression tested" actually means
It appears in almost every used-engine listing. It is a real test with real value, and it proves less than most buyers assume.
A compression test measures the peak pressure each cylinder can build while the engine is turned over without running. If a cylinder seals properly — rings against the bore, valves against their seats, head gasket holding — it builds pressure. If it does not, it does not.
That makes it a fast, cheap screening test for the most common serious faults in a used engine, which is why the trade uses it and advertises it. It is worth understanding because “compression tested” on its own is a claim, and the numbers behind it are evidence.
Consistency matters more than the number
Buyers usually want a single figure that means “good”. There is not one, because the healthy range depends on the engine and its compression ratio, and because readings vary with the tester, the ambient temperature and whether the throttle was held open.
What travels well across all of that is the spread between cylinders. Four cylinders clustered closely together suggests even wear. One cylinder noticeably below its neighbours points at something specific in that cylinder, and that is the finding worth acting on — regardless of what the absolute numbers were.
So the useful request is not “was it compression tested?” but “what did each cylinder read?” A seller who tested the engine has those figures. A seller who cannot produce them has told you something.
Compression versus leak-down
They are often mentioned together and they answer different questions.

If a compression figure comes back low on one cylinder, a leak-down test is the sensible next question rather than an immediate reason to walk away. It distinguishes a valve problem from a ring problem, and those are not equally serious.
What the test cannot tell you
This is where the phrase is oversold. Compression is a cylinder-sealing test and nothing else. It does not speak to:
- The bottom end. Bearings, crankshaft and oil pressure are untouched by it. An engine can seal beautifully and still knock.
- Timing components. On a belt-driven engine, belt and water pump history is a separate question and a consequential one.
- Which engine it actually is. No test identifies the variant. That is what the stamped code is for.
- Oil condition and history. What the oil looks like, and what the engine did for a living, both matter.
- Whether it suits your vehicle. A perfectly healthy engine can be the wrong engine.
So treat healthy compression as clearing one hurdle rather than as the engine being proven. The inspection checklist puts it in sequence with everything else worth checking.

Compression figures are condition evidence. The stamped code is identity evidence. Your vehicle’s year, model and trim are fitment evidence. A good purchase has all three, and most disappointing ones are missing at least one.

Yes, and this is how used engines are normally tested. The engine is turned over with a tool rather than by its own starter in a vehicle. It is a legitimate method, though it makes the result a little more dependent on how carefully the test was set up.
What does a compression test not tell me?
Quite a lot. It says nothing about bearings, oil pressure, the timing components, the transmission, or whether the engine is the variant the listing claims. An engine can post even, healthy compression and still have a bottom-end problem waiting. Treat it as one input among several.
