The B20 is the largest-displacement member of Honda’s B-series, built around an 84 mm bore and an 89 mm stroke. It is the odd one out in the family: where most B-series engines went into Civics and Integras aimed at revs, the B20 went into the CR-V, a small SUV, and was tuned for low-end torque rather than a high redline.
Two variants matter to a buyer. The B20B came in the 1997–1998 CR-V. The B20Z followed in the 1999–2001 CR-V with higher compression and a revised head. They are not interchangeable as far as the specification is concerned, though both share the B-series architecture that makes the block interesting to builders.
That building interest is worth understanding even if you only want a replacement engine, because it affects the market you are buying in. The B20 block combined with a VTEC head from a different B-series engine is a long-standing build — the "B20 VTEC" — which means a proportion of the B20s in circulation have been apart. For a straightforward CR-V replacement that is a reason to care about provenance and about what the seller can actually tell you about the unit.
The model year picks the variant
For a CR-V replacement this is close to the whole identification problem. A 1997 or 1998 car had a B20B. A 1999, 2000 or 2001 car had a B20Z, with higher compression and a revised head. There is no trim split to worry about and no market split to untangle, which makes the B20 one of the simpler Honda engines to order correctly.
The exception is the car that has already been through an engine, and on vehicles this old that is not rare. If the engine currently in the car was fitted by someone other than Honda, the model year tells you what the car started with rather than what is in it now. The stamp on the block is the only thing that settles it.
Factory engine or built engine
Both CR-V variants left the factory with a non-VTEC head. The well-known B20 VTEC combination pairs the B20 block with a VTEC head from elsewhere in the B-series, and it has been done for long enough that a real share of the B20s in circulation have been apart at least once.
That is not a warning against built engines. It is a warning against buying one by accident. A built engine and a factory unit are both legitimate purchases and they carry different questions: who assembled it, what parts went into it, whether the block was machined and by whom, whether it has been run since, and what documentation exists for any of it. A factory CR-V unit carries none of those questions and a different set about wear.
So the first thing to establish on any B20 listing is which of the two you are looking at. A seller who can answer that directly is telling you something useful about the rest of the listing. The inspection checklist covers what else to work through before committing.
What arrives, and what you move across
On a vehicle of this age the parts around the engine have the same years on them as the engine coming out. The sensors, the accessories, the manifolds and the mounts on your car are all candidates for reuse, and a used engine does not necessarily arrive with usable versions of any of them. What a long block, a complete engine and a half-cut each mean is worth reading before you compare two listings on price, because they are frequently not describing the same amount of engine.

Identifying a B20
Two checks matter here, and unusually for a Honda engine the visual one is genuinely informative: the head either has VTEC provisions or it does not, and on a factory B20 it does not.
- The B-series stamp sits on the front of the block near the transmission end, on a machined pad.
- Expect to read B20B or B20Z. The trailing character is the part that separates the 1997–1998 CR-V engine from the 1999–2001 one.
- The B20 is a non-VTEC head from the factory in both CR-V variants. A B20 block wearing a VTEC head has been built, not bought that way, and should be described as such.
- Casting marks on the head and the presence or absence of VTEC solenoid provisions are the quickest way to tell a factory unit from a build.
If a listing shows a VTEC solenoid on a B20, that is not a mislabelled photograph. It is a build, and it should be described as one.
What varies between B20s
The list is short because the family is, but the last item catches people out more often than the first.
- The B20B and B20Z differ in compression and head specification. For a CR-V replacement the correct variant follows from the model year.
- B-series transmissions and the CR-V’s drivetrain layout are not the same problem as a Civic B-series swap, and the two should not be reasoned about together.
- A built B20 — block from one engine, head from another — is a legitimate thing to buy but a different thing to buy, with different questions about who assembled it and to what standard.
- Ancillaries from the CR-V application do not necessarily suit a different chassis, and this is one of the more common surprises in a B20 swap.
The CR-V application is its own thing. Reasoning about a B20 by way of a Civic B-series swap leads to conclusions that do not carry across, because the drivetrain layout and the ancillaries are not the same problem. What actually settles fitment is set out here.

What is the difference between a B20B and a B20Z?
Model year and specification. The B20B is the 1997–1998 CR-V engine; the B20Z followed in the 1999–2001 CR-V with higher compression and a revised head. If you are replacing a CR-V engine, the year of the car tells you which one you should be looking for.
Does the B20 have VTEC?
Not from the factory. Both CR-V variants use a non-VTEC head. A B20 with a VTEC head is a build — a B20 block with a head from another B-series engine — which is a well-known combination but is not what came out of a CR-V. A listing should say which one it is.
Is a B20 a good replacement for a first-generation CR-V?
