Honda CR-V Replacement Engines in Dallas
Two engine families across the generations people still replace: the B20 in the first, the K24 in everything after. The split is generational, which makes this one of the easier engines to order correctly.
The CR-V has a clean generational split, which makes it one of the more straightforward vehicles to order an engine for. The first generation used the B-series B20. Everything from the second generation onward used the K24, with the variant following the generation.
The first-generation cars are old enough now that the B20 question usually comes with a second question attached — whether the engine on offer is a factory CR-V unit or a B20 block that has been built with a VTEC head from another B-series engine. Both are legitimate purchases and they are not the same purchase, so it is worth establishing which one a listing describes.
From the second generation the CR-V becomes a K24 vehicle and stays one. The K24A1 covers 2002–2006 and the K24Z1 covers the third-generation cars from 2007. These are common engines with reasonable supply, which is generally good news for the person doing the replacing.
CR-V engines by generation
Unlike the Civic and the Accord, the CR-V rows are separated by years rather than by trim. Find the generation first; the only place inside a generation where the answer moves is the 1999 change in the first.
Where CR-V engine orders go wrong
A generational split removes the trim problem that dominates the Civic. What it leaves behind is a set of narrower questions, two of them specific to the B20 and how it gets described in listings.
The first-generation B20 splits at 1999: B20B before, B20Z after, and the compression differs.
The 1997 and 1998 cars took the B20B. From the 1999 model year the B20Z took over, with higher compression and a revised head. Both are factory first-generation CR-V engines and they are not the same part. On a vehicle this old the year on the title is where you start, not where you stop — the stamp on the block is what confirms it.
A "B20 VTEC" is a built engine rather than a factory CR-V unit, and should be described as one.
No CR-V left the factory with a VTEC B20. That combination is a B20 block assembled with a VTEC head from elsewhere in the B-series, built by somebody rather than by Honda. It is a legitimate thing to buy and it is a different purchase from a factory long block, with its own questions: who built it, what went into it, and what has been done since. A listing that says "B20 VTEC" without saying that much is a listing to ask about.
Second and third-generation K24 variants differ, so the generation is not sufficient on its own.
The second generation used the K24A1 from 2002 to 2006 and the third generation moved to the K24Z1. Same family, same displacement, different variant — so "K24 for a CR-V" narrows the search without finishing it. The model year finishes it.
All-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive CR-Vs bring different drivetrain considerations even where the engine matches.
Two CR-Vs of the same year can take the same engine and still not be the same job. The driveline behind it differs, which changes what comes off to get the engine out and what is worth inspecting while access is good. It does not change the engine you are ordering, but it belongs in the conversation with whoever is fitting it.
Why the year gets you further here — and where it stops
On most Hondas the model year identifies a body and leaves the engine open. On the CR-V it usually identifies the engine as well, because the changes happened between generations rather than between trims sold side by side. A 2004 CR-V is a K24A1 regardless of how it was specified, and that is a genuinely easier starting point than the Civic offers.
It stops in two places. The first generation changes variant partway through its run, at the 1999 model year, so “first-generation CR-V” still leaves two answers. And the move from the second generation to the third is a variant change inside the K24 family rather than a continuation, so the generation has to be pinned down even once you know it is a K24 car.
There is also the point that applies to every vehicle on this site and applies harder the older the car gets. A first-generation CR-V is now old enough that the engine in it may well not be the engine it was built with, and no table can know that.
Reading the stamp, and reading a B20 listing
The code stamped on the block is the definitive answer, and on a B20 it is also the check on whether a seller has described the engine accurately. The engine code guide shows where the stamp is and how to read it.
Because the B20 has a second life in the swap world, its listings are less consistent than most. Establish whether you are being offered a factory CR-V unit or something assembled, and if it is assembled, get the specifics before money changes hands. My CR-V is a 1999 — is that a B20B or a B20Z?
A B20Z. The change happened for the 1999 model year, and the B20Z has higher compression and a revised head compared with the 1997–1998 B20B. The stamped code on the block confirms it.
Can I put a K24 in a first-generation CR-V?
It is a known swap and it is a swap, with mounts, transmission, harness and management all needing answers. If that is the plan, say so on the request — the engine we would recommend and the questions we would ask are different from a straight B20 replacement.
